Speed skating is based on skating for speed, not style. Figure skating is the opposite, as it skates for style and not always speed.

Speed skating requires:

-Lower cut boot, almost like a shoe

-Longer blades than artistic skaters

-the objective is to go fast, not to impress the judges

Figure skating:

-based on competing in a number of levels and elements

-consists of jumps, spins and footwork

-artistry and difficulty are considered when judging

-higher cut boot

-regular length blade, but with a toe pick and edges

Figure skate blades are thicker, and the balance point is at the back, with more blade extending past the heel compared to hockey skates. They also have toe picks, to help with jumps and other maneuvers for figure skating. Figure skates are also "rockered" differently, meaning the blade curves differently, so turning is different in figure skates compared to hockey skates, as the balance is different. Figure skate blades are thicker, too, so they can be faster, as you have more blade contact to push off of.

Hockey skates have no toe picks, as with toe picks, if you accidentally drag your foot or put it too far forward on the ice, you can fall. Also, hockey skates are balanced more neutrally, in the middle of the skate, which helps with recovering balance during the fast maneuvering and contact in the game. Hockey skates have thinner blades, so compared to figure skates, you're going to apply less power to the ice, but they glide a little bit easier than figure skates. Also, compared to figure skates, hockey skates have much tougher construction, as they have to be able to take pucks/sticks, etc.

Figure skate blades are typically wider than hockey skate blade. In addition to that, figure skates weigh less, allowing skaters to jump with a lot more ease and tend to allow skaters to be more agile. Figure skates also have a pick at the front/toe end of the blade to allow skaters to stop at a precise point, whereas the blade on hockey skates is rounded on the front. the ice skate also has a straighter blade, which is why they can have hard guards, but hockey skates can only ware those soft, round guards.

Ice skating is more just skating for fun and figure skating is doing spins and jumps

Ice skating is any type of skating and figure skating is dancing on ice

Whoever put that is wrong! Ice Skating is a sport that just sums up every thing you do on ice... it is a category of all the skating activities on ice! True figure skating is like dancing and spinning (i should know i have won a figure skating Competition!) But it is just a category!

Yes, figure skating and ice skating are different. Hockey is a more challenging sport than figure skating. However, you may receive severe injuries in both sports. In Ice Hockey, you may have to slam against each other, and search for the small puck to score a goal. Ice hockey is also more of a sport that involves teamwork.

Figure skating is a more elegant, sophisticated sport. You may have a partner, you may not. You have to preform various artistic movements and you will be judged on how flawlessly you preform them. In ice hockey, you will be judged on how many scores your team gets during the game.

There are many differences between singles skating and ice dancing. One major reason is the amount of people. Singles is where there is only one person on the ice. They can jump, spin and do feild moves. In ice dance there are two people on the ice. They can't do jumps and they don't do the same elements as singles, unless it's figure skating. Also, in singles there are two categories (Olympics) short program, and long program. Ice dance has three in the Olympics; Compulsory, original and free dance. Lastly, there is anothere type of figure skating called pairs in which there are two people on the ice but they will do jumps and spins together like a singles skater.

Figure Skating is a sport where there are many levels that you progress into by competing with other skaters in your level. In each level there are a certain amount of requirements that you need to preform in front of judges. Its also a very graceful sport.

Speed Skating is a sport where people compete on your speed. You don't have required elements, you just skate around the rink to see who is the fastest. Also speed skaters and figure skaters have different types of blades and boots.
