Essentially, 9-pin Bowling is played with 9 pins instead of the standard 10 in regular bowling and the ball is smaller with fewer finger holes. A very small number of people play in the US as it's mostly popular in Europe.

In tenpin bowling, a ringing 10 pin is pocket shot (a shot that should result in a strike), however the 10 pin is left standing and a pin (usually the 6 pin) flies around, but misses taking out the 10. A flat ten is a pocket shot that results in the a pin (again usually the 6 pin) laying in the gutter rather than flying around the 10.
