"The short answer is PASSION! The rules in soccer are mandated by the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), and do not change from country to country. The same rules apply wherever the game is played at a professional level. Soccer is known as "football" everywhere except the US, only because the name was already taken; also the brand of football that is played here in the US is known everywhere else as Rugby. So, the only real difference is that, over the years, soccer has become the prime world sport. World cup tournaments are played every four years in a different world city every time, with the participation of a diverse array on countries, including the US, and broadcasted live to some 400 million people, (almost all of us). The World Cup is the only sports event that truly brings people together, people from all over the planet, people united behind their country's team hoping for a victory. And that's where lays the PASSION,"

just to correct the previous answer a little, rugby and American football are totally different sports, its not just one sport with a different name in America! the world cup is never hosted in cities, that's the Olympics, the world cup is hosted in countries. the matches take place in various parts of those countries during the tournament and countries can host the tournament more than onc (eg: Argentina, Germany)!

i don't think the previous answer was referring to what you were looking for. the difference is that American soccer is the matches that are played amongst the American club teams, for example DC United and LA Galaxy. international football is matches played between the soccer teams of countries, for example a match between the USA and the Republic of Ireland. another difference is that the standard of international matches is far, far higher than that of American club matches

The difference is that the Spanish soccer has been around for a very long time (since 1929), and it has followers all around the world because of the very well known teams (REAL MADRID, VALENCIA, Barcelona, etc.) on the other hand, American soccer just kicked off right after the world cup celebrated in America (1994); so it would be fair to say that the Spanish soccer and players are more experienced and followed than the American ones.
