Choosing a good skateboard can be tricky, if you're a beginner in the sport. There's a lot that you have to take into account, in addition to the cost. You have to also consider the complete board, the deck, the trucks, and the wheels, whether you're buying a ready-made skateboard or are putting together your own.

That's a great question! The truth be told, do not buy one at Wal-Mart or K-Mart because they're unsafe! They're also sub-par and will ultimately hold you back. Even if you are just a beginner, you should buy a professionally designed skateboard. I'm not saying the most expensive one, but I am saying one that is made well for the activity of Skateboarding. A good place to start is a local skate shop or even on-line by a trusted company like CCS mail order. Also, keep an eye out for generic or "blank" skate products; they're cheap and generally adequate for beginners. The make, size, type, and everything else depends on what's best for you. Before you buy one you might want to consider going through Course 101 on the Skateboard equipment for beginners.

it all depends on who you are, your experience, and your body.

for the record im a big kid- 15 years old, 175 pounds, 5'10. im heavy but i got strength to make up for it. (i barely float my fish board =])

types:

tip: never use boards spit out of a factory machine, they will always have less life and flex to them then hand crafted boards, its worth anything you pay to have a lively board.

kind of board: EPS or fiberglass- i use eps because when it dings it soaks up about 10% of what a regular one would, and it weighs about 70% less and its stronger. my 6 ft long quad weighs about 3 or 4 pounds, that's something to say dammmn about.

if your a flat out begginner- use a softboard or a foam board, they will save you hundreds in board repairs.

when you can stand up alright and care for your board, get a fiberglass board, preferrable a fun-board. a fun board is basically a hybrid, they are long like longboards, pretty thick, but have a pointed nose and a tri fin set-up. that's what i learned on after my foamie, and i still use it every once in a while when the surfs small. stick with basic fins and don't be too picky about a first board.

when you get pretty good (like me)- you have manny more choices to think of

if you like the easy breezy flow of surfing: get a longboard with a round nose and 1 fin

if you like the snappy turns and you see the pros doing aerials, go for a shorter one

-when i got really bored of my funboard and wanted to go further, i got a 6 ft. modern quad fin fish board. to this very day my fish is my most used and favorite board ever. the style of the fish is amaazing, it is uber-short, but wide and a wee bit thicker. mine is mady by RUSTY, and it rocks the ocean, i take it out when the surf is under 3 feet and over 9. the fish board will hone your surfing skills forever, it also generates its own speed, where with a shortboard you have to pump

if you want my board which seems freaking awesome, it is a:

RUSTY brand (the marcedes of surfboards)

6'0, 20 inches wide, 2.45 inches thick, with a fish tail. it has 4 fins, two big front ones and two small back ones, a 6'5 leash, eps foam (the board feels like a feather).

but i wouldn't start out with RUSTY, because they are high class (=expensive) with the fins and leash and pads and board, it totaled over 650$. you could get a non-name brand one for like 400.

when you get super good, get a shortboard- i have one, but only use it on big days, or when i go to blacks beach and lower trestles. these are super hard to balance on for beginners, buy one and itl end up in the trash, or broken in half.

-Pierre-----the only not old person that likes to surf at Tourmaline surf park, even though the waves are slow and fat there, i cant stay away from the place. muahha

A better longboard than a Sector 9 or Arbor would be a Kracked Skulls Scimitar. This is a great, cheap ride that is also fully customizable too. These boards are drop-through mounts making them perfect for Down Hill riding as well as Freeriding. Also the flex makes them perfect for commuting and any beginning or advanced rider. Use the code DECA to even get a discount on any order!

And trust me, as a sponsored longboarder I know what I'm talking about.

dude dont lie as a sponsored longboarder you should know that loaded boards are the #1

Correction: Loaded are the most EXPENSIVE longboards, KS is the best value.

Correction: I am also a sponsored longboarder and if you ask me i would say Original skateboards is the best place for beginners to get a fantastic longboard. they may be expensive but they are still the best longboard you will ever buy!!!

Get a long board. The bigger the board the easier it will be to ride it. The size will depend on your body specs. Go to your local surf shop and the guys working there will help you pick out a board that is right for you.
