Perspex (a hardened plastic compound) is a great backboard material. The thicker it is the less it will cushion the impact of the ball, 7 millimetres thick is plenty. Drill slowly. Plywood is a cheap backboard although not greatly resistant to weathering.

It's not specified in the rules - it only says that it has to be transparent - but they are usually polycarbonate.
