28.66 Years old as of 2006-2007 season. Historically the average age of NHL players has moved roughly between 24 and 28 years depending on the player position. Typically, forwards have had a lower average age than the defense, and goalies have had the highest average age. Also, average age has been higher during the playoffs than in the regular season. Average retirement age for forwards, defensemen and goalies is roughly 28 years. The retirement has moved forward in the recent years as better conditioning allows players to play to an older age.

As of the 2010/11 season:

Mark Recchi of the Boston Bruins is the oldest active player at 42 years of age. Dwayne Roloson, back up goalie for the New York Islanders, is 41. Mike Modano (Dallas Stars), Teemu Selanne (Anaheim Ducks), and Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit Red Wings) are 40.

The minimum age requirement for an active NHL player is 18. Below 18, teams may sign them, but they are not allowed to play any games for the NHL team. As for the top end, and if the player can avoid career-ending injuries during the course of their career, most players will remain playing up to their mid-to-late thirties, or possibly a year or two into their forties. At the VERY old end, Chris Chelios is 46 years old, and currently plays for the Detroit Red Wings.
