The math, assuming all teams are created equal, seems simple. Each conference in the NHL sends eight teams to the playoffs. That means that 57 percent (8-of-14) of Western teams will make the postseason, and only 50 percent (8-of-16) of Eastern teams will do so.
There is no rule for how many wins are needed to be in the playoffs. The more wins the better but, the team only needs to be a division leader and therefore automatically given a playoff spot.
Joe Montana has 16 wins in the playoffs
There is no minimum for wins, the team must have a record that puts them among the top 8 teams in the region that they are in (either East or West)
Series are best 4 out of 7.....so it is 4 wins per series and 16 games to win the championship
They have made the playoffs nineteen times with 20 playoff wins and three Superbowl wins.
Red Auerbach had 1037 wins including playoffs.
Chicago Bears, as of start of 2011 season, 704 Regular Season wins, 721 including Playoffs. Green Bay Packers are second with 664 Regular Season wins, 693 including Playoffs. NY Giants are third with 636 Regular Season wins, 656 including Playoffs. Pittsburg Steelers are fourth with 546 Regular Season wins, 579 including Playoffs. source: NFL
It varies depending on the standings of the teams that are positioned to get into the playoffs. The top eight teams from each conference get in, but the number of wins that have gotten teams to the playoffs go from as low as around 36 wins to being as high as 72 wins. Any NBA team that wants to qualify for the playoffs has to finish with a better record than the team holding eighth place in their conference.
