The term hat trick started in cricket. Specifically, a match between the All-England cricket team and the Hallam XI at Sheffield's Hyde Park ground, during which HH Stephenson of the All-England XI took three wickets in three balls. It was customary at the time for outstanding sporting feats to be rewarded by a collection - and the proceeds were used to buy a hat, which was then presented to Stephenson. The tradition of throwing hats onto the ice when a player scores a third goal in ice-hockey reportedly started with a 1940s Toronto haberdasher who used to give Maple Leaf hockey players free hats when they scored three goals in a game.
