There have only been two German F1 World Champions - Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Neither of these drivers have burned in a crash.
However, Niki Lauda is an Austrian triple World Champion who crashed at the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring and was caught in a fire and had his ear burned off. He returned to F1 later that year, despite being badly injured. He has always worn a hat since, and currently presents the Austrian F1 coverage.
Also, German driver Wolfgang von Trips probably would have become F1 champion had he not died in a dreadful crash in Monza in 1961, which also killed 14 spectators.
A third person you could be thinking of is the other Austrian World Champ, Jochen Rindt. He died while practicing for the 1970 Italian Grand Prix, also at Monza. He later won the drivers' championship of that same year postumously, when no-one could surpass his points total.
