A jockey is a professional athlete who rides racehorses.

Most jockeys are self-employed, but represented by an agent who helps them find mounts (horses) to ride. This can be a difficult task when the person is starting his or her career, as racehorse trainers are reluctant to take risks with unknown riders because both the rider's and trainer's income depends on winning as many races as possible.

Jockeys whose horses win first, second or third place (also called win, place and show) are paid a percentage of the "purse," or prize money. The winning rider receives 6 percent of the purse; the second "place" rider receives 1 percent; and the third "show" rider receives a half percent. Jockeys also receive a fee, called a jock mount, of $35-50 everytime they race, win or not.

A successful jockey often rides in more than 1,000 races a year; a few jockeys have ridden more than 50,000 races during their career.

Most jockeys are between 5' and 5'7" tall, and weigh between 110 and 116 pounds. Both men and women compete in this sport, but women are under-represented at only 10%.

Horseracing is considered one of the most dangerous sports because an average of two jockeys die every year in the United States, and many more are seriously injured.

a jockey rides horses in races.

but if he/she is new, he/she is an apprentice, or a "bug boy"

bettors know this because of 1, 2, or 3 asterisks next to his name. 3 means he has a 10 pound allowance, until he wins 5 races. 2 means he has a 7 pound allowance, until he wins 35 races. after that, 1 asterisk is left and he carries 5 less pounds until the day of his first win.
