Skins is a style of play/competition. Normally you will place a certain amount of money to bet per hole. Ex) lets say you bet $5 per hole. if you win a hole (have the lowest score on that hole) you get "that skin" and when the round is over you get $5 (or whatever amount you set) per "skin".

A skin is basically one hole, whoever wins the hole wins the skin. The skin usually has a monetary value. If two players are tied on one hole, the skin rolls over, so the next hole is worth two skins, and so on and so one. Weekend golfers will play for skins with their friends for about £5 or $5 and professional golfers will play big sponsored events for $100,000-$500,000 a hole!

a skin is a certain amount of money set for each hole that goes to the outright winner. If players tie, the skin(s) are carried over until a player wins a hole outright.
