In slow pitch softball there are often 10 players on the field instead of the traditional 9. The 10th player is that short fielder, sometimes called a "rover", who plays in the outfield, usually at a shallow depth between the outfielders and infield.
Most teams will shift the short fielder from right to left, depending on the batter. Generally speaking, right handed batters hit more balls to the left side of the field, so the short fielder moves more to that side, and vice versa for left handed batters.
In some cases, slow pitch and younger aged fast pitch, you can have more than 3 outfields. The 4th outfielder is typically played in position between the outfield and the infield. This is the short fielder.
