An overhead hit in Badminton is a hit that requires to hold the racquet somewhere above the head level in order to hit. It doesn't matter if it's off to the right or left sides, just if it's hit above your head. A powerful overhead hit is also known as a smash, which the shuttlecock is being smashed down across the net and is driven down towards the ground in the opponent's court. These are usually aimed at kill points, points that are near the boundary lines.

Overhead clear is a stroke where if you are a right handed player strike the shuttle with your right arm on your left side wich means your right arm is an upside down L over your head. Clearing a ball is when you strike the shuttle hard enough to reach your opponents base line (the line furthest back) from your own baseline.

When the shuttle comes at you at high speeds in an arc and you don't have time to get behind the ball for a placed shot, smash or drop. The clear will push the ball to the opponent's back court, giving you time to get back in position to receive. .

Overhead clears are vital in badminton, its a simple skill that can earn you alot of points. A good example of when to use it is if the opponent has come close to the net. If they are close to the net, they might not be agile enough to turn around and get to the other end of the court, so they might run backwards, however this isn't always successful, but if they are close to the net, give an overhead clear, and it will make it more difficult for the opponent to return the shot. Also, if you've developed the skill well enough, aim for the back corners, this makes it even more difficult for the opponent to return the shot, even if they're at the back of the court!
