Originally, running into the try zone and touching the ball down did not give any points. All you got was an attempt or 'try' at goal via being allowed to place the ball and kick (a place kick for goal). Or when William Webb Ellis put the ball down he asked: "Was that a goal?" and the sports master replied, "No, but it was a good try".

a try in Rugby union is worth 5 points (in bold there is some other info for you) (a conversion is worth 2 points) (a drop kick is worth 3 points). But who wants to see Foley, Halfpenny, Carter or Steyn taking the 3 points. I want to use people like Rene Ranger running over James O'Conner and Sonny Bill Williams linking up with Julian Savea with a cheeky offload. Under the sticks and an easy seven. I love when Vunipolia means a huge tackle leaving a broken body in this wake.

A try in rugby league or union is when the ball is touched down inside the behind goal area. The rules in rubgy league are * The laws of rugby league specify that a try is scored if an attacker grounds the ball simultaneously with a defender. * An attacking player whose momentum does not allow the ball to reach the try-line or in-goal after their ball-carrying arm touches the ground may not reach out to score if a defender is in contact with them; this is disallowed by interpretation as a "double movement". * The goal posts and padding are not part of the goal line so grounding the ball at the foot of the posts will not result in a try. * Players who are in touch-in-goal and not carrying the ball may not score a try by pressing a loose ball still in play to the ground. * A try may not be scored in a scrum which crosses the goal line, but when the ball comes out of scrum a player may pick it up and 'bore through' their own scrum to score a try.

in rugby a try is the equivalent to a touchdown in American football. you do however, have to literraly touch the ball to the ground on the goal line or in the "in goal" area to be awarded a try. However, in both rugby league and in rugby union, if the referee believes that a try has been prevented by the defending team's misconduct, they may award the attacking team a penalty try. Penalty tries are always awarded under the posts regardless of where the offence took place. In rugby union, the standard applied by the referee is that a try "probably" would have been scored. The referee does not have to be certain a try would have been scored. In rugby league, the referee "may award a penalty try if, in his opinion, a try would have been scored but for the unfair play of the defending team 1 try=5 points in the Union code and 4 points in the league code.

To score a rugby try a player must place the ball on the ground on or over the try line. Or on the ground immediately adjacent to the goal posts.

It is when the ball is touched down behind the try line. It is called a try because it used to be three points when you score a try. Today, you score 5 points for a try.
