∙ 11y agoA masse shot refers to making a shot that in addition to sending the ball in a direction with forward momentum, the cue imparts a heavy spin to the ball that is usually more powerful than the forward momentum. This results in the ball arcing and rolling to follow the path of rotation imparted by the cue tip. To make the shot, the cue tip must be in very good shape and well chalked, then the cue is elevated at more than 45 degrees, and up to 90 degrees - the cue is brought down sharply to the side of the ball where the rotation is needed. Much practice is needed to get used to the awkward bridge hand for a masse shot. The location of the hit, the angle of the cue, and the stroke must be practiced many hundreds of times before the player can expect to make the masse work as intended.
