The guard is the position on the offensive line that is directly to the right or left of the center (there is a right and left guard). Next to the guards on the outside are the offensive tackles. The guards protect the quarterback on passing plays, and run block (run up the field blocking) on running plays. On running plays the guard can pull meaning after the snap he quicly runs over to the other side of the line and blocks for the running back. This leaves a hole on the side he was originally on but gives the side the running-back is running to an extra blocker.

The guard is, in defense, the person who stands in the front. When the offense dribble the ball down, the guard is the first able to contact the ball. They stand in the front of the box, the part closest to the half court line.

Guard is a position player on the field. There are two. These are the two offensive linemen who play on either side of the center, who is the offensive lineman who lines up directly over the ball and snaps the ball to the quarterback behind him. A more technically accurate definition would be that the guard may be an offensive OR defensive lineman who is 2 spots in from the End. On both offense and defense the widest players lined up on the line of scrimmage are called Ends. The next widest are called Tackles, followed by our Guards, and then the Center. On defense, one tends not to count the Cornerbacks as being on the line even though sometimes they do creep down there. On offense, people often forget that one of the Wide Receivers is technically an End known as a Split End who lines up split away from the rest of the linemen. This contrasts with the Tight End who lines up tightly against the rest of the line. I offer that because it can be confusing why the Offensive Tackle is lined up far from the ball, but the Defensive Tackle is very close. The mistake is counting from the inside out rather than from the outside in. In the old days when teams played 5 defensive linemen, the middle one was called the Nose Guard because just like the offensive guard, he was three spots in from the End.

Flag guarding is when the player with the ball intentionally guards his flag by hitting or slapping the defensive players hand away from the offensive player's flag.
