However many the golfer/s want him to, he could forecaddy for just one person or all four of them (he can also forecaddy for two or three people).

There is only really two, the caddy who carries the bag and the forecaddy, who ball spots in practice rounds and cleans the clubs before play (forecaddies aren't too common anymore).
How do you forecaddy?
To forecaddy, you run about 200 yards from the tee box and watch where the golfers hit their ball. If the ball is in the rough you mark it and pay attention to the other golfers drives. If it is out of bounds or close to it, you give them a sign which tells them if it is safe or not. You find the distances of their next shots, clean their clubs, rake the bunkers, fill in divots, just like you would caddying. Around the green you tend/pull the pin, and wash the golfers balls. Also, you may read putts if they ask you, or you may offer to help them to do so, which will get you a bigger tip.
Where did the golf term 'fore' come from?
As today players many years ago had caddies, and each caddy had a "forecaddy", the forecaddy would assist the caddy. The forecaddy would stand out in the fairway and wait for the balls to be hit from the tee, so they could be found. As soon as the player hit the ball, the caddy would shout "fore", a shortening of the word forecaddy, to let him know the ball was coming.
