In the sport of Fencing there are three different types of blades used by fencers. Different rules are used for matches depending on which blades are being used.
Foil - a light and flexible blade (with a rectangular cross section) tapering to a point with a rubber safety tip.
Épée - similar to the foil, only not as lightweight, and the blade is stiffer (with a triangular cross section), also tapering to a point with a rubber safety tip.
Sabre - has a wider triangular cross section along the bottom 2/3 of the blade and tapers to a thinner blade with a striking edge the top 1/3 of the blade, so it is flatter than the foil and
épée. Also, it is slightly lighter than the épée while slightly heavier than the foil, and the tip of the Sabre blade folds over creating a dull end.

There is the Foil, which employs a set of right of way rules, and targets the torso. The foil is a stabbing weapon only.
There is the Epee, which has no right of way rules, and the entire body including the head is considered a target, this is also a stabbing weapon.
And there is the Saber, where the upper body is a target, this is a slashing weapon.
