An Olympics 'demonstration sport' was an event that was not played/competed to win medals but played/competed in the hopes of the event gaining popularity and possibly being added to the Olympics as a medal sport sometime in the future.

Demonstration sports were discontinued in the Olympics after the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona.

Demonstration sports that eventually became medal sports include baseball, Taekwondo, and Badminton. Baseball was a demonstration sport in four Olympics (1912, 1936, 1964, 1988) before becoming a medal sport in 1992. Badminton was a demonstration sport in 1972 and 1988 before becoming a medal sport in 1992.

Other demonstration sports that did not become medal sports include water skiing (1972), bowling (1988), and roller hockey (1992).
