It's when a star player(usually the foundation of the team or highest paid) is traded, or when a group of talent from multiple teams is moved in order to acquire one or more players. Team A gives up A+ player for 2 infielders a closer and another team gets a outfielder and a starter. So what happens is, team A get relief money or fixes a current problem with A+ player, team B gets a boost in their line up, team C takes the scraps and builds on it.
