A bilge keel is a small blister running along the side of a ship's hull, used to reduce the hull's tendency to roll.

The additional underwater surface of the bilge keel creates extra resistance to the side-to-side rolling of the hull, but does not stop rolling altogether.
The bilge keel is fitted at right angles to the bilge radiused plating but does not extend beyond the extreme breadth line . It positioned after model test to ensure minimum resistance to forward motion of ship .

They are NOT very similar, although they may have a streamlined aerofoil cross-section (to reduce drag). Bilge keels (& most keels) serve to stabilise the vessels course and to prevent drift to leeward; so in some ways are similar to an aircrafts's fin (UK) or vertical stabilizer (US). The secondary function of a bilge keel is to allow the boat to settle in a stable manner at low tide.
A single continuous line of planking or metal plating running longitudinally on a vessel's hull. On modern metal hulled vessels the strake running the centerline of the vessel is known as the "Keel Strake". Other strakes are assigned letter designations working outward from the keel strake; "A" strake, "B" strake, etc. The strake at the turn of the bilge is called the "Bilge Strake". The longest continual strake at the uppermost deck is called the "Sheer Strake". Aside from the keel strake, there are two of every strake: Port & Starboard. Depending on the curves of the ship's hull, some strakes may be terminated before reaching either the bow or stern of the vessel.
