A track has 5 lanes.
All 5 component of fitness is involved in all track and field events. however there importance and distribution will be different from one event to the other. For example, event though the 100m sprint and the 400m are both categorized as speed event, absolute speed is more important to the 100m sprinter than it is for the 400m runner.

In High School track and field, you are allowed to compete in 5 events. You may compete in 3 field events and 2 running events or 3 running events and 2 field events.
As a coach and track and field participant for many years...scoring has always been as follows: Open events - 5-3-1 Relays 5-3-0 Field events - 5-3-1 Tri-meets try to encourage participation, but discourage loading each event with endless numbers of participants. It's called a clapper board. It is for synchronizing the sound track to the movie track. The sound of the clap can be heard on the sound track and can be seen on the film track. See the link for more interesting information.

In order to get better at track and field, try improving your finish line time. For example, if you can run a mile in 5 minutes, try speeding up a bit and train to run it in 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
