∙ 13y agoThe '49' in 49ers relates to the year 1849 and 49ers is a term used for the people that went to California to search for gold in what is called the California Gold Rush. Gold was discovered there in 1848 and by 1849 its discovery had pretty much spread around the world. Thousands and thousands of people from all over the world began coming to California to search for gold.
