It depends which part of Peru. In the big Cities there are people that live to much the same as Westernised cities to the same standard if not better but this is a very small sector of the population. The majority of city inhabitants live modestly, having low income jobs and helping one another as a family to establish themselves. There are also a great number of poorer city dwellers who have a very difficult lifestyle and struggle to keep their family clothed and fed. The area around Lima, the capital has numerous slums where there is no running water, sewerage or street lighting.

In the mountains the people live off the land. They live in adobe houses with tin, tiled or straw roofs. They subsistence farm, having small crops such as potatoes , quinoa, wheat, cattle, llamas, sheep etc. The use wood to fuel their fires for cooking and travel to local markets to sell their produce. Houses are concentrated in small villages and scattered in the mountain valleys. Mountain Dwellers Dress in brightly colored woven woolen garments with ponchos and hats. The principal mode of transport is on foot or on horse back In the jungle people live in small villages near the major waterways. Houses are constructed of wood and have grass roofs. They wear light simple clothing due to the humidity.
