The Chinese have long been good at the sport of Ping-Pong. It could be that the government focuses more on training ping-pong athletes than athletes in sports that the Chinese are traditionally not good at.

∙ 13y agoIn China, Table Tennis is considered the "peoples" sport and partly because almost anyone can play.
But it started for them back in the early 1950's. My information is China's chairman at that time, Mao I think, saw table tennis was something that might help reduce problems they were having with drugs by getting as many as they could to take part. They even built concrete tables that could be played on outside and placed them in many locations.
It is estimated that China now has 20 million "tournament" players. Now compare that to the USA who has about 10,000 "tournament' players and 20 million "recreation" players.

∙ 10y agoWell, Chinese people are small, which helps a LOT in gymnastics. Also, I've been to one training session in china and if they think you've got potential they do whatever they can to help you. They have extremely difficult training and children start from a very young age.
