Best Answer

The red zone is the area of the field between the opponent's 20-yard line and the goal line. When the offense has advanced into this territory, it is expected that it will score some type of points, i.e. a touchdown or a field goal.

The 'red zone' is the area of the field between the goal line and the 20 yard line of the defensive team.

If the offensive team moves the ball to their opponent's 20 yard line or beyond, they are said to be in the red zone. The offense is in a good position to score a touchdown or, at the very least, in position to attempt a short field goal. When an offense moves the ball into the red zone, they are expected to end the possession by scoring a touchdown or field goal.
