Secretariat officially holds the Preakness Stakes track record at 1:53 flat. His time was corrected in 2012 by the Maryland Racing Commission, after having been in dispute for 39 years. Prior to that the debate was between Secretariat and Canonero II due to a clocking issue that occured during Secretariat's 1973 run. In 1973,Secretariat was clocked by three racing officials at 1:53 and two fifths. This would have beaten the record of 1:54:00 by three fifths of a second. But the track's electric timer malfunctiond, and the track's human timer timed him in 1:54and two fifths.Even though three had him in 1:53 and two fifths, the tracks time of 1:54 and two fifths stood.CBS ran tape of the two races simultaneously, and Secretariat beat Canonero by several lengths, proving the three officials had it right all along.
