If you can not find your ball in a hazard is it considered lost?

This is known as a lateral hazard, it differs from a water hazard as you can drop on either side of the hazard. There are a couple of options;
- Take a two club length drop, from the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole.
- Replay the previous shot, from the previous position.
- Keep the point where the ball entered the hazard between you and the pin, and go back as far as you like.
- You do have the option of playing the ball as it lies, but remember, you can not ground you club in a hazard.

∙ 13y agoYou would declare that ball lost and have to play another from the tee, there is a one shot penalty for losing your ball, so you are actually playing 3 off the tee.
When you lose a ball, you must go back to the place you played that shot from, that is why in this case you have to go back to the tee.

∙ 13y agoYou can take a drop with a new ball (one shot penalty of course), but only if you or your playing partners saw the ball enter the hazard. However, if you cannot be sure the ball entered the hazard you have to go back to where you played the previous shot from, this will cost you a one shot penalty.

What if a player hits his ball in the woods off the tee?
There is two options open to you, they each cost you a penalty stroke. You can replay the ball from the tee (which will be your 3rd shot), or you can take a drop. To take the drop, you can go back as far as you want, keep the point where the ball entered the hazard between you and the flag and drop the ball (the next shot will also be your 3rd). As it is a water hazard, you do not need to get the ball, as long as you saw the ball enter the hazard, you are allowed to play another ball.

The key thing is you must know that the ball has went into the water hazard. If it has done so you either play another ball from your original positon, take a two club drop from the edge of the hazard or on a line with the pin and where the ball entered take the ball back as far as you want. You hit a provisional when the ball you just hit might be lost outside of a hazard. Usually that means you think you have hit it out of bounds or into some sort of mess where it's unlikely that you will find it. Hitting a provisional means that you are taking stroke and distance IF you don't find your first ball. If you find your first ball anywhere in play (whether or not you like where it is or even if it's unplayable) before you hit your provisional after reaching where the ball is likely to be, then the provisional is cancelled and you continue with your first ball, just as though you never hit the provisional. Once you've reached the point where your ball probably is and hit the provisional again, you're stuck with the provisional and the stroke and distance penalty that you took. This is covered in Rule 27-2, see www.usga.org. There are many interesting decisions related to this one, mostly about what constitutes a "lost" ball.

You can ask for help to find it from your playing partners or any spectators. You just carefully look for the ball however you must not touch the ball or you will incur a penalty stroke. You can use your club to move parts of bushes or long grass etc to help you look for your ball. You have 5 minutes from the time you arrive in the area you believe your ball is to find the ball.
