The Bolshevik Party under Vladimir Lenin renamed itself the Communist Party in March 1918 after the Russian Revolution. They did this because Lenin had outlawed all other political parties, especially the other Marxist/Communist ones. He felt that since the Bolsheviks were the only political party espousing communism and since there was no further reason to differentiate themselves from the Mensheviks, they should call themselves the Communist Party. So they did.
They didn't, the Russian communist party had had a major disagreement over the issue of if the Bousquise (i.e. capitalist) revolution had to happen before the Socialist revolution or not in Russia as it had in England. This resulted in a split into the Bolsheviks (majority party, who said the Bousquise revolution could be skipped) and Mensheviks (minority party, who said the Bousquise revolution was necessary as Marx had said). Both parties were still communists.
The very odd thing is that on that specific issue the Bolsheviks were actually in the minority and the Mensheviks were actually in the majority of the voting, it was on other issues of lesser significance that the Bolsheviks came out in the majority of the voting at the meeting of the Russian communist party where the split happened.

Yes, they were known as Bolsheviks but after they came into power and abolished all other political parties and factions, the changed their name to the Communist Party in March 1918. Their reasoning was that while before the revolution there were several Marxist political parties, now that all of them had been eliminated, the Bolsheviks were the only Marxist party in existence. Thus it had the sole right to call itself the Communist Party.
