Augusta National Golf Club is an exclusive golf course in Augusta, Georgia and the site of the annual Masters Tournament in April. You cannot play Augusta as a walk-on; you must be invited as a guest of one of the club's members.
Augusta National Golf Club has never disclosed the membership cost, but it is believed the initiation fee is between $10,000 and $30,000 with yearly dues costing between $3,000 and $10,000. Dining and lodging and other services are additional costs. Although it is an exclusive club, Augusta can keep its costs down due to the amount of money they make from hosting the Masters.
There are around 300 members of Augusta. There is no application for membership, it is strictly invitation only. When a spot opens, the club collectively decides who to invite and mails the invitation. All members are given the iconic green blazer.Augusta has drawn criticism in the past for not allowing black members until 1990 and female members until 2012.
If you ever get a chance to attend a practice round, or competitive round, at the Masters - do it, it is an experience you will never forget. In the meantime you'll have to enjoy watching the Masters.
In private conversations with 2 members, it is clear the membership is not about the money. Every member there is well off and the club does not require astronomical dues in order to achieve a certain status. If you are lucky enough to be invited, you accept. Due to the high revenues from the Masters, the membership is relatively inexpensive. Initiation is under $25,000 and annual dues are less than $5,000. Their behavioral standards are extremely high and lengthy. Cell phones are not used on the course. If a member isn't upholding these standards, they are not confronted and formally removed. Instead, they simply stop receiving a bill. This is recognized as a polite "you're no longer welcomed".
How long is a piece of string! The price of a round of Golf varies as to what course you're playing and where. You can play some Golf Courses in Scotland for 1 GBP, others, like Wentworth Club in England, will cost up to 285 GBP. A moderate cost for a bog-standard golf course in the UK would be around 30-40 GBP. Of course, you could always play Shadow Creek in Vegas. Last time I was out there, it was $500 to play it, but then you had to be invited to play by Steve Wynn who owns most of Vegas at present.
The saying goes, 'If you have to ask, you cannot afford it!'
The club has never disclosed how much membership costs, but it is believed to be around $10,000 a year. There is a very small membership base (of around 300 members) and the majority of the revenue is generated by The Masters Tournament, which is held every year in early April. Members are only allowed to play the course between May and October and if a member invites a guest to play at Augusta National, the member must pay for his guest, just a tradition of the club.
The membership is by invitation only. When a player wins The Masters, they automatically become a life long member of the club.
The members at Augusta National play an essential part in the running of The Masters Championship.
