Lineouts - The Locks are normally the largest and tallest of the 15 person team and are targeted by the lineout thrower (normally the hooker) to receiver the ball.
Open play has become very important for the lock - Used to clear-out rucks by their physical presence and as much as possible to be a heavy ball carrier.

They do take in to account size and speed around the pitch. Don't be to concerned at this stage as the skills developed in the forward WILL be used even if your son goes to the backs An example of forward becoming a Back is Wales and Ospreys Scrum Half Mike Phillips. He was originally a forward whose skills at wing-forward served him well as he started to take on the scum-half role
