Depends on the rifle- some do not HAVE a bolt catch. On the AR15 family of rifles, it is the left side of the receiver.

The process is different for a Mark1, #3, and a Mk 4#1 or a Mk5 carbine. The Enfield has a bolt catch that must be released to withdraw the bolt. For the Mk3, open the bolt, and flip the bolt catch UP (it is on the right rear of the frame). When vertical, bolt can be withdrawn. For the Mk 4 and Mk 5, open bolt, flip rear sight up, depress bolt catch (right side, near bolt head) draw bolt back until under the catch, and release catch, which will turn bolt head up. Continue turning bolt head until vertical, then withdraw. How do you load an ar-15?
Pull back on the charging handle. With the charging handle (and bolt) pulled back to the rear, engage the bolt catch to lock the bolt to the rear. Return the charging handle back to the forward position. Insert a magazine into the magazine well, ensuring it's seated and secure. Press the bolt release to send the bolt forward. Tap the forward assist a couple times to ensure the bolt is fully forward.

There'll be some sort of catch which does this, and it can usually be activated by hand and/or by the magazine follower when the magazine is empty. On most handguns and western military rifles, the bolt catch will be on the side of the receiver. Some rifles, such as the SKS, require the use of the magazine follower for the bolt to lock to the rear (such as firing the last round, or pulling back on the charging handle with an empty - but locked in place - magazine). Either way, it's essentially a latch which prevents the bolt carrier (for long guns) or slide (for semi auto handguns) from closing.

Remove the broken bolt and replace it with a new one. There are several ways to remove that broken bolt. You can remove the valve cover and weld a nut to what is left of the bolt, wait for it to cool off then unthread the broken bolt. You can also drill out the center of the broken bolt and use an easy-out. You can also drill into the broken bolt with a left handed drill bit, sometimes the drill bit will catch and spin out the broken piece. I would go with the first suggestion.

Run your car up on ramps. Make sure you have a catch can to catch the oil. About 4 feet back from the front, you will find a large, black, flat area, with a bolt at the end of it. Slowly unloosen the bolt (lefty loosey)--be ready to catch the oil. Leave it for awhile to fully drain. Clean bolt, wipe off the opening, put bolt back in and tighten. Take the oil filter out slowly as well. Don't turn it over until you get it down, then dump it in the catch can. Wipe the opening where the filter was. Wipe a small amount of new oil around the gasket on the new filter, screw it in, once it's tight--just another quarter turn. Fill oil. Start car. Check oil level with dipstick.
