Rip/Liz is a call. Different teams define rip & liz differently. It’s made famous because coach Saban uses it as his base defense to teach his players how to play and put them in this specific framework from day 1 where they build off of it. (At least that’s my understanding).

Typically, and what you’re talking about, it’s a move certain players make based on a read. If they make this read and you’re the rip/liz player you call rip (defensive right) or liz (defensive left) which tells the players around you what you’re doing which then puts them in a certain frame of mind and gives them things to look at.
