'LYR' is an acronym for ' Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway'.
In 1878 the Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway company 'Dining committee' set up a cricket and football club for their employees at their Newton Heath depot in Manchester. The club was called the 'Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Cricket and Football Club'. The name of the football team was shortened to 'Newton Heath L.Y.R.'. In 1892 the football team broke away from the railway and became an independent company trading as 'Newton Heath Football Club'. In 1902 the club changed their name again to 'Manchester United Football Club' which was shortened to 'Manchester United' in 1998 by the then chief executive Peter Kenyon.
