You must wear Rugby boots, complying with the laws set down by your governing body. A good guide to what is and isn't legal is available at this link

Rugby socks are a good idea, as they provide some protection for your shins and are also thicker than normal socks, thus providing more warmth and cushioning (essetial when wearing stiffly supported rugby boots). I'm pretty sure these are strictly necessary, but I've never seen anyone play in anything but these socks.

Your team's kit is essential.

Regardless of the weather, a pair of heavy cotton shorts are a good idea. You will get warm during the match, so don't worry if it's cold out. The shorts should be, but don't necessarily have to be, of a heavy strong material. They are less likely to tear and also provide better grip.

If it is cold or wet, gloves may be a good idea. They provide extra grip and keep your hands warm (if I catch a hard ball in very low temperatures without my gloves on I seem to keep spraining my fingers) Rugby rules dictate that they must be fingerless, so buying special rugby gloves, although more expensive, is the best idea as they will comply with laws and have a special grip on the palm.

Wear a gumshield/mouthguard. These are essential not only for protecting your teeth, but also your jaw. I had tackling practice once, and I went despite having forgotte my gumshield. In a tackle, one of the girls' shoulders went into my jaw, sliding my lower jaw a little bit further than it should have gone. I damaged cartilage in my upper jaw and strained muscles in my lower jaw. Eating and talking was painful for a fortnight. Gumshields are relatively cheap to come by, I once had one for €2.50. I never wore it however, because it made breathing difficult due to the fact that it didn't fit. I've since had one made by a dentist at a cost of €160 but it fits perfectly, and even allows me to talk more or less normally. So long as you take care of it, it should last you forever. The initial cost of a gumshield far outweighs the cost of having dental surgery if you damage your teeth.

It is called a Cap. It actually is a cap and each time you play for your country you get one. At 50 and 100 games you get special ones. The match you play in when you represent your country against Another Country is called a Test Match.
