Best Answer

If it's your first time and your just messing around with pals or trying out at a club.

You need:

A tough shirt that isn't going to get ripped.

Tough shorts

Socks

A GUM SHIELD (absolutely 100% vital no matter what level. Have saved my pearly whites on a number or occasions)

A ball (size depends on age & sex)

Sturdy footwear (football or Rugby boots reccommended. You don't need rugby boots. Rugby boots have thicker leather, so are warmer and dryer in the winter months and have six studs at the front. However this makes them heavier. I have played for eight years for London Irish and had England academy trials and have always worn football boots-i own both studs and blades.) With studs you must replace the football ones with all metal ones, as the plastic ones can and will chip, causing some very nasty injuries.

And don't forget spades of enthusiasm!

As a team you will need

Facilities listed in the IRB regulations.

As an individual you need boots with regulation studs, rugby shorts (not soccer as these will rip in the first minutes) Socks, A training Jersey (this is normally a standard rugby jersey bought in any good sports shop.) and if you are not playing as part of a formal club get your self some muscle liniment or oil as this will be needed to rub in to those leg muscles . If you play in the pack (a forward) you may want a regulation scum cap - these are listed in the IRB Site under equipment and of course a gum-shield. These are not IRB required but most clubs insist on them for certain age groups to protect those teeth

First of all, rugby is similar to Wrestling, so you would probably need safety equipment. You might need a helmet or something.

Though rugby is easiest to play in boots specifically made for rugby, they are not necessary. Soccer cleats work just fine. The only requirement for rugby boots is that they must not have a spike on the bottom of the toes.
