There are many patterns in Taekwondo. Not all of them have Korean names (but most of them do).

The Chang Hon patterns

The Chang Hon or "blue cottage" patterns are known for the combination of fast and slow, light and forceful movements together with extensive footwork. Chang Hon is the pen name of General Choi Hong Hi, founder of Taekwon-Do. There are 24 patterns to represent the 24 hours in a day.

  • HWA-RANG - ancient young warriors of Korea - 2nd Gup
  • CHOONG-MOO - invented the first armoured battleship in 1592 - 1st Gup
  • KWANG-GAE - the king who regained all the lost territories - 1st Dan
  • PO-EUN - a famous poet - 1st Dan
  • GE-BAEK - a great general (660 A.D.) -1st Dan
  • EUI-AM -leader of the Korean independence movement - 2nd Dan
  • CHOONG-JANG - a 14th century general who died young - 2nd Dan
  • JUCHE - a idea that man is the master of his own destiny - 2nd Dan
  • KO-DANG - patriot dedicated to independence and education - 2nd Dan
  • SAM-IL - the historical date of the independence - 3rd Dan
  • YOO-SIN - General Kim Yoo Sin, an ancient general - 3rd Dan
  • CHOI-YONG - General Choi Yong, 14th century - 3rd Dan
  • YON-GAE - another famous general - 4th Dan
  • UL-JI - successfully defended Korea in 612 A.D. - 4th Dan
  • MOON-MOO - an ancient king of Korea - 4th Dan
  • SO-SAN - a monk who defended Korea against Japanese pirates - 5th Dan
  • SE-JONG - the greatest king, invented the Korean alphabet in 1443 - 5th Dan
  • TONG-IL - unification of Korea which has been divided since 1945 - 6th Dan
