the ancient greeks were the ones who started it in athens, it was though very different actually, for example, only men were aloud to play in the olympic games and since the only clothing they wore was very large and hard to play in they played the games... naked. and most of the games were for pure strength such as disc throwing or wrestling. and in wrestling the only rule that there was no eye gouging, everything else was aloud.
