He was the first pro African American Baseball player and even though he was on the team he still was discriminated against. When the team stayed at a hotel or ate at a restaurant he couldn't go there. The white team members treated him with rude and disrespectful comments. Many African Americans who step out and become the first to do something faced the same thing he did. Singer Sammy Davis Jr. in the 1960-70's couldn't stay at the Las Vegas hotel where he was the headline star. He had to stay off the strip.
