Norway is the country that has won the most number of Winter Olympic gold medals. Norway has a cumulative total of 118 gold medals.
At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, CA, the host United States team won a record 83 gold medals as part of a total 174 medals. It's important to note, however, that the '84 games were boycotted by sixteen nations, most notably the Soviet Union, who had been a perennially strong Olympic contender. Lacking any serious competition in many events, the Americans were able to easily dominate the games. Similarly, at the prior Olympics in Moscow in 1980, 61 countries staged a boycott including the United States, which caused the Soviet Union team to run away with the event, winning 80 gold medals for a record 195 total medals. The most gold medals at a non-boycotted Olympics is 79 by the United States at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, USA. Travel being as difficult as it was back then, only 12 nations participated in the 1904 Games and the US had 4 times as many athletes as all the other competing nations combined. So, disqualifying the above three totals for the reasons stated, the most gold medals won is 55 by the Soviet Union at the 1988 Games in Seoul.
Japan won the most Olympic gold medals, with a total of 58 medals by the end of the 2004 Games.
There is no reward, the medals table is unofficial.
