Starting as the Topps gum company in 1938, the Brooklyn, NY based, Topps Gum was eventually replaced by Bazooka Bubble Gum in 1947 and is now one of America's most recognized products.
Topps added trading cards in 1950 to try and enhance gum sales. That year, Hopalong Cassidy and Frank Buck "Bring 'em Back Alive" cards were issued. The following year in 1951 the first baseball cards were published (Red Backs, and Blue Backs game cards.) In 1952 the First set was issued with the famed Mickey Mantle Rookie Card, and a Stick of Gum!

The Fleer company produced baseball cards from 1959 to 1961, and in 1963. The entire first 80 card set, issued in 1959 featured Ted Williams. In 1981, the company once again began producing cards. After bankruptcy in 2005 the Upper Deck company resumed making cards under the Fleer name. Major sets were issued in 2006, and 2007 under the Fleer name but I'm not aware of any since. That depends on the year and who the player is and what condition. There are baseball card catalogs in newstands that show the value of certain cards by year and name of player and company of card manufacturer.
