On November 2, 1964, the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) bought an 80 percent stake in the New York Yankees for $11.2 million. The network later purchased the remaining 20 percent. During the 1965 season, CBS' Game of the Week began airing a majority of Yankees contests on weekends during the regular season.

On January 3, 1973, a group headed by shipbuilding magnate George Steinbrenner III bought the Yankees for $10 million and a couple of parking garages. Steinbrenner served as the ballclub's principal owner until his death in 2010. The Yankees are now run by Steinbrenner's sons Hal and Hank.

The Yankees won World Series titles in 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009 during the Steinbrenner era. In July 2014, Forbes magazine issued its list of the top 50 sports franchises in the world. The Yankees were No. 4, behind three European soccer teams. The magazine reported the Baseball club's value at $2.5 billion.
