There were 2 major athletic events in ancient Greece, (all athletic events were part of a larger celebrations about a deity) Olympia (olympic games) and Panathinaia. After that there were several festivities that had athletic games as a part of them. Isthmian,Actian,Nemean etc. Also there was the ''Heraea Games'' dedicated to the goddess Hera wife of Zeus.

The ancient Olympic games were held every four years , always at the same place in Olympia in Greece. The modern Olympic games were restarted in 1896. The first games were held in Athens, then Paris (1900) , then St Louis (USA) in 1904, then London in 1908.

There was Pankration - A very violent and deathly form of Wrestling.

Foot Races - Running on a track around the stadium.

Race in Armour - A race in a helmet, greaves, sword and shield.

Chariot Races - They were chariot races performed by either one horse or two horses.

Mule Races - Races by donkeys.

Wrestling.
