The "Three Baskets" are known in Buddhism as the Tripitaka (Tipitaka in some dialects). This refers to the three main subject areas that make up Buddhist thought; they are regarded as sacred scripture. One is called the Vinaya Pitaka (Discipline Basket), and it tells the basic rules and laws of Buddhism that the monks who live in the monastery (Sangha) must know. Another is called the Sutra Pitaka (Discourse Basket), and it contains what the Buddha was supposed to have said and the sermons he gave; it offers Buddhists an insight into what Buddha taught and believed. (Although Buddha left no writings, this collection, undoubtedly compiled by his followers, is considered authoritative by Buddhists.) And finally, there is the Abhidharma Pitaka (Special Teachings), a collection of proverbs, poems, and and short essays about the Buddha.
