Most people think kung fu is meant to make you stronger so you can win fights. This is totally wrong! They use it to strengthen their mind and body. Most Buddhist do kung fun and Buddhist do not harm a living thing. The Buddha uses it to train the mind. A lot of kung fu is just for the mind.
Kung Fu in Chinese loosely translates to "Professional fighter." Shaolin Monks practiced it as a way to protect themselves from persecution of their faith and attacks upon their temples. There are many different styles of Kung Fu but one of the main points they share is that there are very few actual rules. Kung Fu is a martial art predicated on causing extreme pain and often injury so, therefore, you will not watch many Kung Fu practitioners using their art for sport.
Find a qualified instructor to teach you! Or, just look on line, for a style that suits you and start training the basics. Qualified instructors, are few and far between, so it's best to get started right away if you are motivated.
It is important because when you are in danger you will know how to use defence against yourself so thatyou won't get hurt. Also it makes you show respect,disciplie and any other stuff that you should learn about kung-fu!!
In China it is not called kung fu, it is called Wushu. Wu means military or martial, shu means art. Even though both terms are used in China both meaning are different kung fu only describes skill or development. Both terms are used in modern Chinese. Kung fu comes from pinyin translation of Chinese to English.
I do kung fu and it's Chinese and it's for defending NOT to hurt on purpose. It's about respect and kindness. You become better and strong and healthier.

Normally kung fu will not be capitalized. If you are referring to a specific style, such as White Crane Kung Fu, you would capitalize all the words. Or if referring to the the television show Kung Fu.
