In a newspaper article in Maryland, the soon to be Baltimore team owner posted something asking what the team name should be. There were about 5 names, and Ravens was chosen. The Ravens team name was famous because of Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem, the Raven.

The current Ravens Stadium (M&T Bank Stadium), located across the street from Oriole Park at Camden Yards, was built over the 1996 and 1997 seasons after the Ravens moved from Cleveland after the 1995 season. During those 2 years, the Ravens played at Memorial Stadium on 32nd Street in Baltimore, where the old Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Stallions of the CFL played. The stadium has been known by several names, including PSINet Stadium, Ravens Stadium, and M&T Bank Stadium. The stadium opened for the 1998 NFL season. It seats nearly 72,000 fans, and was voted in 2012 as the loudest stadium (fan noise) in the NFL. Its audio and video system is also state-of-the-art, with 2 100'x20' HD screens at each end of the stadium.
The Baltimore Ravens team name was selected by fan vote shortly after owner Art Modell brought the franchise from Cleveland and left the Browns name and history there by legal agreement. The name Ravens was listed as one of the top 2 names that fans voted for (and ultimately chose) as poet Edgar Allan Poe lived and is buried just about a mile from M&T Bank Stadium, where the Ravens currently play. His famous poem "The Raven" written in Baltimore, was the inspiration for the name. Colts was the other name at the top of all the fan votes. Modell approached Colts owner Jim Irsay (still vilified in Baltimore) about buying the rights to the Colts name and former records/history, but he wanted $50 million for the privilege. Modell, though willing, was in no position financially to make such a transaction.
The Ravens' team naming contest was held shortly after the franchise relocated from Cleveland. 2 names stood out in all of the voting - Colts and Ravens. Colts owner Jim Irsay wanted 50 million to transfer the rights to use the Colts name; in the end, it was just too much money, and the city and fans just decided to make a clean break with the past.

The 3 original Ravens human mascots were Edgar (#101) Allan (#102) and Poe (#103), named in honor of poet Edgar Allan Poe, whose poem "The Raven" is whom the Ravens are named for. They worked the sidelines during home games up until the 2009 season.Beginning in 2009, Edgar and Allan were retired, and Poe remains as the sole human mascot. In Edgar and Allan's place, 2 new live Ravens, Rise and Conquer, were named as the 2 new Ravens mascots. Housed and kept at the Baltimore Zoo, Rise and Conquer spent several weeks in training to learn how to deal calmly with the loud noise and number of people at Ravens home games, which is normally over 70,000.Both Rise and Conquer are handled on the sidelines by zoo handlers during home games. They have quickly become fan favorites, though Poe still gets a lot of attention as well.
There is 7 teams with animal names.
Cleveland Browns (current, not the Art Modell transplanted Ravens), Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, and Arizona Cardinals ... until Sunday, that is.
