How is American sign language is traditionally handed down from generation?

ASL can be handed down typically: Via Deaf families. New offspring are automatically taught ASL from birth and on.. Via Deaf programs - typically many teachers at Deaf schools can sign, and there are Deaf teachers who can sign ASL. Deaf friends at these programs also play a role in exposing other Deaf (who do not have Deaf families) to lots of signs. Via Deaf schools - At Deaf schools where dormitories are present, many children learn ASL through friends at the Deaf schools. These kids were taught by their Deaf parents, Deaf siblings, etc. And other kids at the Deaf schools have learned via various methods as well, and when they arrive as a new student at the Deaf school, they also pick up the signs specific to that school and local area.

What are the two languages that blended to make ASL?

ASL originated with an early incomplete version of French Sign Language (FSL) and pre-exiting deaf-community signs in the U.S. The deaf community would add to the French Signs, which is the basis of ASL as we know it today.

Where did ASL come from?

Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's neighbor had a daughter named Alice, who was Deaf and had no language. This was in the early 1800's, at there was no school for the Deaf at this time, nor really any sort of Deaf education. (the solution at that time was to put your deaf child in an institute.) Gallaudet traveled to Europe in to learn how they taught their Deaf, at the few schools they had. He met Laurent Clerc, a French Deaf Educator, and brought him with him to America. Clerc used FSL, French sign language, that was combined with Gallaudet's signs, student signs, home signs, etc, and it evolved into American Sign Language. ASL, like all languages, has a much more in depth history, but hopefully this overview gives you a general idea. You can also check out http://www.gallaudet.edu, or take a Deaf culture class if available in your area.
