The main rules of Netball and things that umpires mostly pick people up for are stepping, obstruction, off side, contact, and off court.

Stepping- In netball you can't run with the ball, but you can pivot on one foot. The first foot that is planted when you catch the ball is the one that stays still. You swivel around on this foot, moving the second foot that landed after you caught the ball.

When umpires pick you up for stepping, you do not have to stand out of play, and someone from the other team will come down to the spot where you stepped to take the pass.

Obstruction- This is when you have your arms up defending your player but you are not a full three feet away. If you are picked up for this you stand out of play, and an opposite player will either pass the ball or shoot.

Off side- Off side is when you step over the line that your position is not meant to cross.

In netball there are 7 players on each side playing on the court. The Goal Shooters and Goal Keepers can only play on the one third that they shoot and defend on. The Goal Attacks and Goal Defences can go up to 2 thirds and in the ring on the side that they are shooting/defending on. The Wing Defences and Attacks can not go into the goal circle, and only play on 2 thirds. The Centre players can both go anywhere on court except for the goal circles.

Off side is when you go out of 'your zone'. The umpire blows the whistle, and you do not have to stand out of play. Someone from the other team will pick up the ball and pass.

Contact- This is any contact on a player who has the ball, or rough play on your player. Contact can come in many forms such as tapping the ball while an opposite player is holding it, touching the ball or knocking your player while they have the ball, and leaning in (when both players are pressing or pushing against each other, the umpire may call for a toss up between the players).

If the umpire picks you up for contact, you will have to stand out of play and the player who you contacted will either take a pass or shoot.

Off court- This happens quite often in games either when someone taps the ball of the court, or someone misses a pass and it goes off the court.

Off court is simply when the ball goes off the court, which, although a very basic and simple rule, happens quite a lot in games.

When the ball goes off court, the umpire will say which team last touched the ball before it went off the court, and then the opposite team will get to take a pass from behind the sideline wherever the ball first went out. If you were the one who last touched the ball before it went out, you do not have to stand out of play, you can just play on.

Another main rule in netball is replay ball, which is when you bounce the ball twice or more. You don't have to stand out of play, and the opposite team takes a pass.

These are the main rules of netball, and once you get used to them you don't even have to think about them!

Personal story: Last year was my first time ever seeing a game of netball being played, let alone playing it myself! I was shocking to start off with, but then I got used to all of the rules and improved a lot. At the end of the season I was given a trophy for the 'most improved' in our club, and this year I play in the top team of my age group!

1. you are not allowed to step whilst holding the ball

2. you are not allowed to bounce the ball

3. you are not allowed to hold the ball for more than three seconds

4. you are not allowed to defend a player closer than three feet.

5. you are not allowed to replay the ball. (This means you are not allowed to throw the ball then run and catch it in the air. If it hits the floor or a player or a post then you can grab the ball. Replaying the ball also means you are not allowed to bounce the ball more than once.)

Netball was first played in England in 1895 at Madame Osterburg's College[4] and soon spread throughout Australia, the then-British colonies of Jamaica and Antigua, and indeed most British Commonwealth territories.
