According to the official NBA Rules under Section II - Equipment: b. A transparent backboard shall be marked with a 2" white rectangle centered behind the ring. This rectangle shall have outside dimensions of 24" horizontally and 18" vertically.

goal is anchored to the backboard in a manner that allows the goal to breakaway

when overloaded to prevent serious accidents. Standard placement of the goal

is commonly 10' above and perpendicular to the floor below. Goals are equipped

with some form of netting designed to check the balls velocity and direction.
