The court surface at Wimbledon has always been real grass, hence 'Lawn Tennis', although clay courts and synthetic indoor courts also exist at the complex for training purposes. Although the courts are especially prepared with particular grass and soil for the purpose, the grass does naturally wear down over the use of the courts and can develop bare patches and slippery areas.
